Full kitchen installation, or a renovation that goes further
Some kitchens just need fitting. The room is the right shape, the services are where they need to be, and the job is a strip out, a bit of making good and a careful installation. We do plenty of those, and we are happy to fit a kitchen you have bought yourself from Howdens, Wren, Magnet, DIY Kitchens or an independent maker. The jobs that suit us best go further than that. A kitchen renovation in a Milton Keynes house from the seventies or eighties usually means moving the sink, adding circuits for an induction hob and an island, replastering walls that were never flat, levelling a floor that was never level, and quite often taking out the wall into the dining room to make one room. That is building work as much as it is kitchen fitting, and it is better done by the people who do both.
Kitchen diner knock throughs and RSJs
The wall between the kitchen and the dining room on most estate houses is load bearing. Taking it out means a structural engineer sizes a steel beam, we prop the floor above, cut the wall, install the beam on padstones, then fire protect it and box it in so you end up with a flush ceiling rather than a downstand. Building Control inspect and sign it off. We manage that liaison where it forms part of the agreed scope.
Done in the right order it is a two to three day structural job at the front of the programme, not a disruption in the middle of it. Then the room is one space, the electrics go in for the new layout, and the kitchen gets fitted into a room that was designed for it rather than squeezed round an old wall.
Why the preparation matters more than the units
Units are square. Old houses are not. If the wall behind the run bows by 15mm nobody notices until the worktop goes on and there is a gap you can see daylight through. So we replaster where it is needed, level the floor and move the electrics and the waste before a single carcass is opened. It adds a few days. It is the difference between a kitchen that looks fitted and one that looks bolted on.
Plumbing, electrics, plastering and flooring, managed as one job
Our trusted trades cover the whole kitchen: a qualified electrician for the new circuits, cooker supply and under cabinet lighting; plumbing for the sink, dishwasher, boiling tap and any radiator moves; plasterers for the walls and ceiling; and the flooring, tiling and decoration at the end. You deal with one company and one programme, and Allison in the office keeps you told where the job is each week.
Timing, since people ask. A straightforward kitchen installation is usually one to two weeks once the room is prepared. A kitchen renovation with a knock through, replastering and new flooring is more often three to five weeks from strip out to handover. Worktop templating adds a wait of a week or so in the middle if you are having stone or quartz, and we plan the programme around it.
Planning ahead for the new year
Most people start thinking about the kitchen in the autumn and want it done before the spring. If that is you, the honest advice is to get the site visit booked early. Kitchens are the longest lead item on the job, particularly anything made to order, and a quotation in the autumn is far more likely to get you a start before spring than a phone call after Christmas.

Our kitchen work is best suited to projects involving more than simply replacing units in the same positions. Where a renovation includes structural alterations, changes to services, plastering, flooring or wider building work, we can manage the complete project from preparation through to installation and finishing. If it really is a straight swap, we will still quote, but a kitchen fitter on their own may be quicker for you.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?
A straightforward kitchen installation into a room that is ready for it is usually one to two weeks. A kitchen renovation with a wall coming out, replastering, new electrics and new flooring is more often three to five weeks from strip out to handover.
The thing that stretches it is the worktop. Stone and quartz are templated once the units are in and take a week or so to come back, so there is a pause in the middle. We plan the decorating and the flooring around it rather than leaving the room empty.
Can you take the wall out between the kitchen and the dining room?
Almost always, yes. On most Milton Keynes houses that wall is load bearing, so it needs a structural engineer to size a steel beam, Building Control to inspect it, and the beam to be fire protected and boxed in afterwards. We arrange the engineer and the inspections where that is part of the agreed scope.

Can we stay in the house while you work?
Usually yes, and most of our customers do. On an extension you can live fairly normally right up until we break through into the existing house, which we leave as late as possible for that reason.
On a full renovation it is harder but still workable. We go room by room, keep a working kitchen and bathroom going as long as possible, sheet up properly and clean down at the end of each day.
